What is Backflow Prevention?

Backflow is the reversal of polluted water into clean water supplies, typically occurring at points where clean and contaminated water lines intersect, often due to pressure fluctuations like burst water mains. This contamination can include substances like human waste or chemicals, posing serious health risks. Non-compliance with regulations can result in financial penalties, legal repercussions, and reputational damage for establishments.

Are you Backflow compliant?
Are you Backflow compliant?
There are few things more important to the health of a community than clean drinking water. We’ve seen the awful impact that contamination events can have. That’s why municipalities have enacted safeguards to eliminate the threat of water “backflowing” into the drinking-water system. MeadowBrook can help ensure your facility is equipped to protect the people living in your community, and the staff working within your facility and ensure your business is protected from non-compliance penalties.
Why is Backflow so important?
Why is Backflow so important?
Quite simply, “backflow” is the reversal of water flow from your on-property water system back into the municipal drinking water system – or even into the drinking water of buildings on your property. There are a couple of reasons this might happen. Imagine there’s a sudden drop in water pressure flowing into your facility, perhaps from a broken water main or from a nearby fire hydrant being used. The water from your property then gets pulled back into the drinking water system. This can also result if you have elevated water-storage tanks, creating higher pressure than the in-flow from the municipal system. The major concern is contamination. Untreated water flowing from your property into your community’s – or your facility’s - drinking water raises a host of potential health concerns.

What do I need to know about the Backflow Prevention Program?

To protect drinking water supplies, municipalities have enacted regulations and by-laws to prevent backflow. Based on your facility, the regulations vary depending on the contamination risk of your site and how hazardous a backflow event would be. Once your property is assessed, backflow-prevention devices may be required, and annual inspections will be scheduled.

Our team will review your site and provide you with a free quote on the required installations. And, upon your approval, we handle all of the permitting. Once we get the green light, our highly-trained, licensed plumbers handle the installation. Upon completion, our installed devices would be inspected and approved by a municipal inspector. This, too, would be managed by our team. Municipal bylaws also require the installed equipment to be annual tested and maintained. Our certified backflow technicians take care of the required testing as well as submitting the reports to the municipality. If our testing indicates a failure and/or a required repair, we work with you to ensure this is taken care of promptly.

If you have a larger property with multiple water meters, a cross-connection survey may be required. Essentially, a “cross-connection” is any potential connection where the drinking-water system could meet a source of contamination; such as a fire-protection system or an irrigation system.
Not sure if you need a cross-connection survey? Give us a call – we’d be happy to help you.
