Overheated Breaker Causes Costly Downtime and Product Loss
How Neglected Electrical Maintenance Can Cause Severe Business Disruptions
Backstory
The manufacturing plant had been operating for many years without any major electrical issues. However, with the increasing demand for their products, the plant decided to expand their operations, leading to the installation of additional electrical equipment. As a result, the power consumption of the facility increased, leading to an overload on the existing electrical system. One day, while running a new product test in the containment chamber, the breaker feeding electrical equipment started to trip. The electrician was called to the site to troubleshoot the issue.

CHALLENGES AND PERCEIVED RISKS
Electrician was called to the site to troubleshoot the nuisance tripping of breaker feeding electrical equipment.
Found that loose terminations had caused overheating of the breaker and consistent failure. Electrical equipment showed no signs of failure
until the unit was opened for inspection when loss of power was discovered. By this time, the test for a new product in the containment chamber
(refrigerator) was deemed ineffective and the whole process needed to be restarted.
Risks included wasted/lost products, downtime for production, and costly electrical component failure.
WHAT DID WE DO
Customer did not have any alarms so they were not aware they lost power to equipment. They had to redo the entire test. We went in
to install additional circuits to relieve the load. We went in after the fact to complete a Thermal Scan of the facility.
WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME
- It was repaired however it came at a loss as there was no proactive approach
- If a Thermal Scan was completed regularly this could have been caught. An annual thermal scan has been scheduled for moving forward.
