What is a Cross Connection?
A Cross Connection Survey is an inspection of your plumbing system and backflow devices. The objective of these surveys are to ensure your equipment is functioning properly and that it adheres to municipal codes. If an issue is detected, addressing it through a repair or update will be needed to pass the Cross Connection Survey.
A cross connection is anywhere in your facility where plumbing fixture or piece of equipment is connected to the municipal drinking-water line. Likely, this could be found in a number of places around your building. It could be a connection to the fire-prevention system, irrigation systems, hoses for cleaning and landscaping needs, your water-heating system, or even into a water softener.
Why is a Cross-Connection Survey important?
A Cross Connection Survey will inspect your connective devices and identify any risks that could result in water back-flowing from your facility into the drinking water system. If a risk is detected, recommendations for necessary repairs, upgrades or backflow-device installations will be made. Ensuring your facility is backflow compliant is a crucial aspect of your operations.
Backflow events are caused by
- Back pressure: If your facility has elevated water tanks, or water pumps, that create a higher level of pressure than the incoming water lines. That imbalance causes water from within your facility to be pushed back out into the drinking-water system.
- Back siphonage: This happens when there is a sudden drop in the water pressure coming into your facility. Water main breaks or large quantities of water being used to fight a fire are examples of causes. Water from your property gets pulled back into the drinking-water system.
