CASE
MORE MEETING SPACE
BUILT-IN FLEXIBILITY
A FLEXIBLE AND DYNAMIC SPACE
Backstory
The Oakville office of a global technology company was in need of more meeting space for their employees, specifically rooms that could accommodate five or more people. Employees were holding such meetings in the open-concept office space which was a distraction for others.
Initially, MeadowBrook Construction was contracted to build a large conference room on the second floor and adapt space next to the cafeteria for meetings, as well.
Project Requirements
To repurpose an area on the second floor that was under-utilized for a conference room
- Demolition of the space, salvaging materials where possible
- New flooring, new walls, painting
- New lighting
- Address HVAC implications
To be able to close off an open space that was being used for meetings next to the cafeteria

THE CHALLENGE
Choosing more environmentally-aware options in demolition & construction
That the facility is a LEED building, demonstrates the client’s commitment to the environment and sustainability. Designers and the construction team needed to take this into consideration with the materials they worked with and how they worked. For example, ordinarily a second-floor demo would mean discarding materials down a chute from a window. Not only is that not possible in a LEED building with a specific HVAC system where the windows cannot be opened, but greater care was needed to salvage materials that could be re-used on the project.

THE SOLUTION
Bringing new ideas forward for greater functionality
While preparing the plans for the new conference room, we suggested that they use mobile partitions. This now gives them the flexibility of having one room for a large meeting or 2 or 3 smaller meeting rooms that suit 10-20 people.
On the first floor, we installed an accordion door to close the room off from the cafeteria. This gives the flexibility of keeping the door open for added space in the cafeteria.
